Day 14: Cab rides.

14 Jan

Last night, I ventured out with roommate Kaitie to see a friend of a friend’s band play at the Velvet Lounge on U Street. I thought the downstairs bar vibe was more my thing than the live music upstairs.

But then, a few hours later, I grabbed a cab home.

The driver was blasting Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass.” I dutifully told Kaitie that Taylor Swift liked this song, a random nugget of information that stuck itself into my brain.

Driver man sensed we weren’t digging the Minaj, so he started flipping through his music selection.

“You like Adele?” he asked. Cue “Rolling in the Deep.”

I, of course, sang along. When the song ended, he quickly located the Glee version of “Don’t Stop Believin’” (the series premiere version, if you really want to know).

Driver man told us how he likes to pick the music in his cab ride to make it better for his customers. Example: once, a fighting couple got into his cab. He played the right music and the girl half of the couple started to dance. When the driver dropped them off, the guy half paid the man $20 and said thanks for saving his night.

He then proceeded to ask us what our favorite songs of all time area. Kaitie the music reviewer dutifully said hers changes all the time. I owned up to the truth. What can I say? “(I’ve Had The) Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing just gets me. (Aside: Kaitie says DD is awful and cheesy. I say it’s a great story about love, growing up, learning about the realities of the world and, most importantly, dancing.)

Sadly, I don’t think driver man knew what I was talking about. He moved on to the next obvious question: Who is your favorite Canadian artist? Celine? Shania?

I replied Celine, but next thing I know, “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” was starting. Again, I sang along and may or may not have been dancing in my seat.

We arrived at our intersection shortly thereafter. Kaitie said it was like the cab driver was playing my brain’s radio station.

I have another way of putting it: best cab ride ever. Well, at least until I find the karaoke cab in Arlington.
